Laser Tracker SMR and Reflectors

MetrologyWorks is proud to offer a full line of Laser Tracker SMR (Spherically Mounted Retroreflectors). Other common names for an SMR can include TMR, CCR, Ball RetroReflector, BMR, Retro Reflector, or Ball Mounted Open Air Corner Cube.

Each MetrologyWorks Laser Tracker SMR is compatible with all major OEM Laser Tracker brands, including FARO, API, and Hexagon (Leica). We offer three different SMR styles, all of which are available in 1.5”, 0.875”, and 0.5” sizes with multiple centering accuracies so you can choose the exact SMR that best suits your application and budget. Also, nearly all of our SMR options are always in stock and available for overnight shipment. We understand that unexpected accidents can happen with SMR’s, and we are here to support you with overnight shipping to your critical laser tracker projects.

Glass Element SMR – Silverback and 24K Series
These two series are produced using glass optics, which are assembled by precisely joining 3 separate pieces of glass. The optics are then very accurately centered within the stainless steel balls. The glass optic SMR’s also feature a proprietary design that includes an isolation core. This isolation core adds stability and durability. While the glass optic SMR’s offer the lowest starting prices, they are inherently more fragile than break resistant or Solid SMR’s and care must be taken to not drop them.

Break Resistant SMR – Rhino and Gladiator Series
Our legendary break resistant SMR’s feature one-piece inserted aluminum (Rhino Series) or Titanium (Gladiator Series) optics. They are assembled using our proprietary Precise-Lok technology, which ensures that the optics cannot dislodge from the ball. Other “break resistant” competitor SMR’s have optics that can shift or pop out of the sphere after a few or even one short drop. With our Rhino and Gladiator SMR’s, you can Drop, Pick Up, and Measure On. They provide the durability and performance of a Solid SMR, but at a more affordable price point. Ask about our Super High Accuracy Rhino Series SMR’s for applications that require the very best centering accuracies on the market.

Solid (“Break Proof”) SMR
Our Solid SMR’s feature an ultra-durable, one-piece design. Their optics are cut directly into the stainless steel sphere, so nothing can be dislodged or cracked if they are dropped. They are also the most thermally stable SMR design for taking laser tracker shots in extreme hot or cold temperatures. MetrologyWorks proudly offers the widest variety of Solid SMR centering accuracy options on the market.

For more specialized applications, we also offer two unique ball finish options with our Rhino and Gladiator Series SMR’s:

– Matte Finish SMR’s allow you to integrate laser tracker measurements with various scanning hardware, including Laser Radar, Structured Light Scanners, and other similar scanning systems. The dull matte finish provides a superior return with scanning systems as compared to standard shiny stainless steel balls.

– Coated Ball SMR’s feature an abrasion resistant, hardened coating on the stainless steel ball. They are an excellent option if you are directly measuring highly abrasive surfaces with your SMR’s. The abrasion resistant coating greatly reduces wear rates of the SMR sphere surface and can help extend the life of your SMR’s.

We also produce and stock a variety of hard cases to store and protect your SMR’s when they’re not in use. They are available for all three SMR sizes (0.5”, 0.875”, and 1.5”), and they can hold anywhere from 2 to 12 SMR’s or more. Ask about our custom SMR and combination tracker tooling cases as well.
